Glossary¶

Each row names the page that defines the term. That page explains it in full; every other page links here or there on first use.

Term Meaning See
AI assistant An assistant app you already use, connected to ShotWork so it can search your library and draft reels. AI assistant
autosave snapshot The copy of unsaved work ShotWork writes every few seconds, offered back after a crash. Documents and tabs
beat, downbeat, beat grid The beats found in a song, the first beat of each bar, and the marks the analysis draws in the beat lane. Beats and downbeats
beat lane The row under the music lane that shows the beats over the song's loudness curve. Beats and downbeats
budget The reel's length limit, set with Limit to. Set a length budget
card A clip with no footage behind it: a title card renders an overlay template, an image card holds a picture, a color card a solid color. Cards
clip A shot placed on a reel. Add shots
company The studio or client a shot was made for: the Company field. Describe a shot
component Software ShotWork fetches or carries rather than being: ffmpeg, libmpv and the downbeat engine. Install ShotWork
cut, dip to black, cross-dissolve The three ways two clips on a reel can meet. Transitions
detail panel The panel on the right of a shot selects tab that holds the selected shot's details. Describe a shot
detect shots Letting ShotWork find the cuts in a source and propose a shot for each. Detect shots
downbeat engine The optional download that finds downbeats, the first beat of each bar. Downbeat engine
fade in, fade out, fade wedge A ramp from or to black at a clip's edge, and the shape drawn on the clip to show it. Fades
feature A tile in the reel's Features tab: a fade, music, a card or a template. Building a reel
ffmpeg, libmpv The two components ShotWork fetches, or on Windows carries in the installer: one reads and exports video, the other plays it. Install ShotWork
field item An item in an overlay template that prints one of a shot's fields. Build an overlay template
field preset The set of metadata fields a new shot selects file starts with, per discipline. Field presets
free tier, license ShotWork without a license file, and the file that lifts what the free tier holds back. The free tier and your license
gap A stretch of the reel where nothing plays; it renders as black. Arrange clips
handles Extra frames exported on either side of a shot's marks. Export shots
holds for How long a clip plays on the reel. Holds and shortening
hotkey A keyboard binding. Every one can be changed. Hotkeys
in point, out point The first and last frame of a shot. Mark in and out points
interest point, interest range A frame marked with P as worth keeping. A shot's points span its interest range; with one point, the range runs from it to the shot's end. Interest points
library The Library window, and the shot selects, reels, values, logos and songs it tracks. The Library window
logo The image attached to a field value, for overlays to print. Logos
marker, cut What Alt+Left and Alt+Right jump between: a shot's in and out points on the source timeline, the cuts between clips on a reel. Move around a source
music lane The row under the clips that shows the reel's songs as bars. Music
overlay template A layout of text, images and field items laid over clips. Build an overlay template
override A template set on one clip in place of the reel's own. Overlay templates
playback range The stretch of a timeline shown and, when looping, played; set with the range slider. Move around a source
playhead The marker for the current frame. Move around a source
problems list The list under the reel's summary, headed Needs Attention, that names what blocks export. Reel settings
profile A separate set of settings, library and caches, for a demo or a tutorial. Where ShotWork keeps its files
project The production a shot came from: the Project field. Never the document itself. Describe a shot
reel A .swreel document: clips arranged on a timeline, with music and overlays. Building a reel
reel settings panel The right pane of a reel tab: Selected Clip Settings above, Reel Settings below. Reel settings
reel timeline The timeline on a reel tab. Arrange clips
reorder, trim, roll, slide, slip, replace, ripple The edits on the reel timeline. A ripple is a trim that moves every later clip with it; a slip changes which part of a shot plays without moving the clip. Arrange clips
restricted A shot flagged as not cleared for public use. Describe a shot
Selects The label on the tab and in the menus for shot selects: New Selects, Add Selects…. Marking shots
shelf The row above a timeline's ruler that holds the playhead's time. Move around a source
shot An in point and an out point on a source, with the details you enter about it. Mark in and out points
shot list The pane on the left of a shot selects tab that lists the sources and their shots. Marking shots
shot picker The pane on the left of a reel tab, under its Shots tab, listing every shot in your library. Add shots
shot selects A .swselects document: one or more sources, and the shots marked in them. Marking shots
ShotWork The application. ShotWork
snap, snapping Edges pulling to beats, other clips' edges, interest points and the budget line; a song bar's ends snap the same way. Arrange clips
song A music file in your music library, or on a reel. Music
song bar A song as drawn in the music lane; what you drag to move or trim it. Music
source A video file a shot selects file marks shots in. Open a video
source timeline The timeline under the viewer on a shot selects tab. Move around a source
strip The band along a clip's top on the reel timeline; grab it to reorder. Arrange clips
template band The row on the reel timeline showing which template applies where. Overlay templates
